These 3 simple steps can help save you, your loved ones and belongings.
1. Plan
- Plan ahead! Have a kit of things that you can grab in the event of a fire, including important papers, medication and other belongings that have personal meaning. Besides this, it is important to create a defensible space around your home so that if a fire were to come close, these areas can either hold it off long enough to ensure your safety or to protect your property entirely. Lastly, make a plan so that you know where you are going to go and who you have to keep in touch with.
2.Know
- Know what is around you, if there are dead trees or other dead woody material, this is something that you have to be aware of. Knowing your surroundings can help defend your property if they are well taken care of. And if given enough warning, these are the areas that should be focused on when creating a water barrier between your property and potential fires.
3. Act
- Put your plan into action! Stop putting off creating these defensible spaces. Plant shrubs and trees that will help defend your property. Create clearances on all of your trees to help protect them from fire, so they can continue to defend your property. Fires can be inevitable. Be ready to fight back.
