Forest Fires can be... good?

I know that this may come as a surprise to many, but a smaller, controllable forest fire is actually more beneficial to the health of a forest than not having any fires and them all being put immediately out and especially better than large mega fires sweeping through the forest.

  • Giant Sequoias are actually unable to reproduce without forest fires.
    • Heat actually allows them to spread their seeds to land on the ground and germinate. No fires means no new trees
    • Sequoias are extremely fire resistant, which is why they are some of the oldest organisms on the planet.
  • Fires can clear any dead or unhealthy trees to make room for new ones!
  • Fires also help to break down debris and other things on the forest floor which allows for nutrients in the topsoil.
  • Fires help to keep the forests from becoming overpopulated with trees which can cause issues in the forest.
  • Having more frequent, smaller fires, reduces the risk of mega fires which can destroy the ecosystem and stop it from ever returning.
Now that you know more about fires, how do YOU feel about them?
