How did the owners of the Siuslaw forest manage the timber industry and the overall health of the entire forest?

  • They replaced the woody debris that was removed from waterways to restore the ecosystem for aquatic life in their waterways.
  • They replanted trees close to the waterways so that woody debris can naturally fall into these waterways and keep the ecosystem healthy.
  • They rebuilt their roadways in order to prevent the roads form being destroyed in natural storms and other disasters, which can be scatter across ecosystems causing issues for the habitats in them.
  • They came together to find a way to repopulate their populations of salmon. They created passageways for them to travel through their streams and waterways and reconnected their waterways to the natural place in the ocean that they would enter and exit through because throughout the years this passageway was closed by human interaction with the forest.
  • They thinned the forest that was reforested when the timber industry took over large areas of the forest and planted many trees in the same area. This will help the overall health of the forest and restore the natural state of the forest.
The restoration of the forest has shown how much work has to be put in to restore the effects of humans on natural beauties like the Siuslaw forest and give us insight on how to continue sustainably having a timber industry AND have healthy forests!
